Sustainability: Top 10 Tips

As sailors, we value clean seas but also recognise that each event we run creates an environmental footprint. We work in partnership with Kick Out Plastic to help reduce this footprint and spread the environmental message at all levels, locally and internationally.

We ask that you, as a guest of the 52 SUPER SERIES keep this in mind and help us to protect our environment. Below are 10 small things you can do to help a bigger cause:

1. Recycle, recycle, recycle
Seems like an obvious one, but we all forget sometimes. You will find paper, plastic and organic waste recycling bins close to the race office. If you’re unsure where they are, please contact the race office.

2. Avoid single-use plastic bottles
We provide all sailors with a reusable aluminium water bottle which keeps the water cold and reduces the amount of plastic waste. Top up your water via our eco-friendly water filtration system, sponsored by Bluewater Waterfilters,  located by the race office.

3. Bring a spill kit
Spill kits are a great way to mop up accidental oil spills in the sea. You simply drop the fibrous cloth into the affected area and it soaks up all of that nasty oil, instantly.

4. Reduce fuel consumption
Challenge yourself. Do you need to be out on the rib for that long? Is there a more efficient route from A to B (i.e. a straight line)? Track your fuel consumption and challenge yourself to do better next time.

5. Bring eco-friendly cleaning products
If you plan on cleaning your boats whilst ashore, could your cleaning products harm the marine environment? The race office has some sample products that you can try out for free! Contact the 52 SUPER SERIES if you would like us to purchase products in bulk for you.

6. Think before you print
Do you really need to print that document? Can you just print one version? Can you print on both sides with recycled paper and ink? There are always things we can do to reduce our footprint.

7. Operate a shuttle bus service
if your team members are arriving at different times, you are encouraged to try and reduce the amount of cars required to transport them to their accommodation. Find out when people are arriving and see if many people can use the same car.

8. Bring your bike!
The 52 SUPER SERIES will visit some beautiful landscapes. Why use four wheels when two are better for the environment, and for your heart?

9. Coordinate container deliveries
Tell the 52 SUPER SERIES when we can expect to receive your team containers and we can coordinate the port’s cranes to reduce the amount of fuel needed.

10. If in doubt, shout!
Within each sailing team there is a Sustainability Ambassador who promotes all of the above initiatives. To find out who your Ambassador is, just ask your Team Manager.
