The Plattner family’s South African flagged Phoenix sailed to a conclusive win in the first race of the ABANCA 52 SUPER SERIES Baiona Sailing week in light 8-9kts winds on Galicia’s ria de Vigo. With Tom Slingsby calling tactics complemented by strategist Cameron Dunn Phoenix profited from starting at the committee boat, right hand end of the start line and being the only boat to go right on the early part of the beat. They led at the top windward mark and extended to be nearly 800 metres ahead by the finish line. The Thai flagged team of the Whitcraft family – which has five family members on board Vayu – made a great start to their first full 52 SUPER SERIES season as they rounded the first mark in second which they held all the way to the finish line. Defending circuit and world champions Sled, with owner-driver Tak Okura back on the helm, took third.
