Azzurra won the first race of the Rolex TP52 World Championship as Cascais dealt the fleet near perfect conditions, 17-20kts of NW’ly breeze and nice surfing waves.
After a disappointing start to the season, Azzurra made a clear statement of intent when they won the early right of the course, which meant they were able to step clear of the scrap behind them. The twice world champions and current 52 SUPER SERIES champions led around the windward mark and were never challenged. Quantum Racing were fifth at the top mark first time up but gained down the first run as did Platoon, going through the leeward gate in second and third.
At the top mark last time up Sled had gained to third but their kite blew up, luff to leech, early on the run and dropped to eighth. Defending champion Platoon got third while Luna Rossa had to retire before the start with a hydraulic problem, but will be back for Race 2.
