The Roemmers family’s Azzurra, leaders of the 52 SUPER SERIES going into the final regatta of the circuit, extend their overall lead by virtue of their win in the first race of the Menorca 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week.
In the changeable winds and a big leftover sea state, kicked up by yesterday’s strong winds and frontal passage, conditions were challenging. Vasco Vascotto called the first beat well for Azzurra, who started nicely, one third down from the signal boat. Azzurra led comfortably at the first windward mark and had extended to be over 300m ahead of second-placed Gladiator.
In the shifting breeze, Sled made a big gain down the last run, finding pressure on the left of the downwind, to get up to third at the finish line behind Gladiator. While Azzurra’s win takes them to be eight points ahead of Platoon and ten up on Quantum Racing, the American team pulled back a nice recovery from ninth at the first top mark to finish fourth, Platoon finishing sixth.
