With the wind down a bit from the first two days, and the sea state as well, the pressure was squarely on the tactical teams for Race 5 of the 52 SUPER SERIES at 2017 Quantum Key West Race Week. The teams spread out along the line, each looking for a good lane to launch up the track. Interlodge charged off the pin, with Azzurra closely to windward. Those two, along with Bronenosec bit hard into the left side while the rest of the fleet worked the middle and the right. The left proved good with Interlodge rounding first and Azzurra five lengths behind. The battle for third was quite tight and a few boats, Quantum Racing among them, fell victim to an inability to get positioned correctly in the starboard layline parade to the windward mark. Azzurra kept the pressure on throughout the race, but the team on Austin and Gwen Fragomen’s Interlodge, led by helmsman Ian Walker and tactician Andy Horton, proved equal to the task earning their first win of the regatta and the boat’s first win as well. Azzurra was a close second with Rán Racing third and Provezza fourth. After doing circles at the leewark mark and finding themselves in last place, Quantum Racing ground back to eighth, saving a few crucial points.
