Eduardo de Souza Ramos’ Phoenix team won the Coastal Race for the ZENITH Royal Cup Marina Ibiza Regatta after they were best at negotiating a difficult transition zone between two opposing breezes after rounding Tagomago Island.
Azzurra worked tirelessly and smartly to hold on to a valuable second place which moves them back ahead of their rivals for second place overall on the BARCLAYS 52 SUPER SERIES Rán Racing which finished seventh. Some valuable gains in the problematic no-go zone rescued a fifth place for the regatta and circuit leaders Quantum Racing which were lying eighth on the run down to the island turn.
Tony Langley’s Gladiator with Ray Davies calling the tactical choices lead in the early stages, passed at the island by Azzurra. But a transition zone, marking the conflicting SW and NE breezes proved key.
Phoenix were able to read the difficulties of those ahead of them and chose to hug close to the Ibiza, island cliffs where they were able to punch through to the solid SW’ly again and jump out in front of Azzurra and Provezza.
