Quantum Racing collected their fifth race win in a row at the 32nd Copa del Rey MAPFRE as the Bay of Palma delivered the best conditions yet at this third European regatta of the 52 SUPER SERIES season.
When they needed to keep the regatta leaders behind them, Ran Racing looked to have achieved that primary goal when they made their best start yet and were able to lead Quantum Racing out to the favoured left side of the course. But on the second beat as Quantum Racing had managed to close to the race leaders, Ran Racing crossed too close and had to make a penalty turn, instantly dropping to third. Niklas Zennstrom’s crew managed to pip Interlodge on the finish line but are now seven points behind Quantum Racing with three races still to sail.
Penalties were rife in the very close racing, both Azzurra and Paprec required to make turns after a compact leeward gate rounding.
