On a 1-2 scoreline for today’s two races, Rán Racing has jumped to the top of the leaderboard in Day Two of the 52 SUPER SERIES.
Conditions of the day were postcard-perfect, with 12-16 knots of breeze from the north providing flat water and just enough changes in shift and pressure to keep the racing close: leaders could not be comfortable while followers had their chance to challenge for the top.
The day’s first race had Azzurra winning the start and holding the lead until almost the bottom gate, but a last-minute gybe away towards the right gate put them into penalty trouble with Gladiator, prompting them to do two turns after the rounding and cede the lead to Rán.
In the building pressure of the second five-leg race, it was Rán that took the start and the early lead, but she too ran into trouble while in the lead. At the top mark rounding she let Azzurra play through after having to do a turn for hitting the mark. Azzurra then never looked back and skillfully covered the pack follwing close behind, who fought with each other for the remaining podium positions, most dramatically demonstrated by Quantum and Rio who were overlapped going into the final few metres of this race.
