Audi Azzurra Sailing Team had their first taste of victory, winning the second race on day two of the Royal Cup, while Quantum Racing miraculously finished second despite offloading an injured crewman mid-race.
Rán Racing finished third followed by Audi Sailing Team powered by All4One, Provezza and Aquilla.
Just six boats competed in the fourth race of the series after a collision during race three forced Gladiator and PowerPlay to retire with damage.
Azzurra made a clear start after a penalty marred beginning in the first race to lead the fleet’s procession to the top mark. Quantum rounded next, followed by Rán, Provezza, All4One and Aquila.
In a dramatic development during the second leg Quantum reported that sail designer/upwind trimmer Brett Jones had injured his hand and transferred him to their chase-boat for medical attention.
The shorthanded crew returned to racing and miraculously held second place, rounding mark two just 41 seconds after first placed Azzurra. All4One edged ahead of Provezza, while Aquila remained in sixth place.
Azzurra held their nerves against the chasing pack in the 15 knots southerly to claim their fist victory in Palma Bay.
